In Finland Outsider art is reaching new audiences every year. The Finnish tradition of Outsider art is relatively young. But we are good at mapping, cooperation and creating networks. In Finland you can find and visit hundreds of fascinating outsider art environments, private homes and art studios. Welcome to explore these places and exhibitions, that will lead you to new worlds.
Outsider art is a rather broad concept, that covers art created outside the established art scene. In Finland Outsider art refers mostly to self taught (ITE) contemporary folk artists and artists with learning or mental disabilities.
Outsider art is self-expression and a creative way of communication. Outsider art often refers to visual art, but it can also be music, theatre, performances, dancing, films. Within Finnish outsider art we are also utilizing the latest technology and embracing new audiences. Finding outsider art can start an adventure, that gets you astonished and hooked.
Inside Outside Finland
Inside Outside Finland is a virtual art work showcasing the history of Finnish outsider art, the artists and artistic environments as an interactive 360° video experience. The artist Jani Leinonen acts as a guide for the art work leading the spectator on a virtual visit to artist Enni Idi’s home in Padasjoki, Veijo Rönkkönen’s Parikkala Scuplture Park, Autism Association Finland’s studio in Helsinki and Kalevi Helvetti’s live performance.

Finnish contemporary folk art is called as ITE Art (I-T-E Itse Tehty Elämä = Self Made Life). Surveying, archiving, exhibiting and collecting ITE Art has been done from 1998 by the Association for Rural Culture and Education (MSL), with its networks. MSL also owns the largest ITE collection in Finland and manages the database of ITE Art.
Pertti’s Choice is an Outsider Art Agency founded by a famous Finnish punk band Pertti Kurikka’s Nameday (Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät). www.pkn.rocks. Pertti’s Choice promotes cultural diversity with a punk attitude and runs the Agency from a shop and Outsider Art Gallery in the new Outsider Art district Konepaja, Helsinki. Pertti’s Choice is the first social enterprice founded by people with disabilities in Finland.
Pertti’s Choice produces high quality cultural programmes and projects in collaboration with Lyhty Cultural Workshops. Lyhty ry is a non-profit association founded in 1993. Lyhty provides supported housing services, a learning unit for young adults, workshops in craf work, maintenance, gardening, music, media and cafeteria and a cool radio station called Radio Valo. Autism Foundation Finland currently operates in 18 locations throughout Finland to help deliver independent and meaningful living for people in the autism spectrum. Autism Foundation Finland has an art studio in Helsinki, where dozens of established and aspiring painters and sculptors work daily.
Kukunori is a think tank and civil and human rights NGO championing social welfare for all, aiming to develop new and innovative solutions to challenges in the mental health and cultural sectors.
The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) is a funding agency providing expertise and services for the promotion of the arts. Ethnomusicologist Esa Vienamo (MA) has been appointed regional artist for outsider art. The role of the regional artist for outsider art is to promote the artistic work opportunities of outsider artists, reinforce the structures for these activities, and engage marginalised artists.
Outsider Art Finland website connects Finnish Outsider Art, artists, cultural professionals, organizations and brands to global audience. The website is hosted by Pertti’s Choice Outsider Art Agency and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland.
